About IRT

What is the No-Cost Medical Event or Innovative Readiness Training (IRT)?

Healthy Cortland IRT (Innovative Readiness Training) is a Department of Defense training exercise to provide real world training opportunities for our service members while supporting the needs of America’s underserved communities.

The Department of Defense (DoD) has special units that are made up of degreed, highly skilled doctors, nurses, veterinarians, dental professionals, and other who happen to also be active duty or reserve service members. They are required to participate in regular training to keep their skills honed so that they are ready when they are needed in an actual emergency situation. To do that, these troops offer to provide clinical services at no-cost to the public in communities which demonstrate a need for services. This allows them to fulfill their training requirements and also support communities whose populations may not have adequate access to certain services or may be unable to afford them.

Southern Tier 8 is the lead agency who applied for the 2019 IRT for both Cortland and Chenango Counties. The 2019 Healthy Cortland IRT will be provided in partnership with Southern Tier 8 and a planning committee made up of many partners from Cortland County.
